Scar treatment Baltimore

Scars can occur from many types of injuries to the skin. Nothing can restore the skin to perfect, but at MDLSV, we offer many techniques to help soften the appearance of scarring. In addition, the itching and pain that scars can cause can usually be decreased. Scars from injuries and surgery can form thick, ropey like areas. Cortisone injections can soften and flatten these in most cases. Pulsed dye laser treatment can reduce redness and help blend the scar. Laser resurfacing can often provide additional benefits. Acne is an especially common cause and can cause several different types of scarring. Depressed scars can be helped in various ways.

Subcision describes a process of breaking up the bound-down scar tissue with a needle; this is done with a local anesthetic with very little discomfort. Injection of fillers (hyaluronic acid most commonly) also helps to lift up the depressed scars. For working on more superficial scars and enlarged pores, different types of noninvasive laser resurfacing are helpful to stimulate collagen remodeling under the surface. This stimulates a “fill-in” effect where the body’s own collagen helps to fill in the scars over time.

At MDLSV, we have worked with many lasers to improve acne scarring. For scars with loss of pigment (white scars), laser resurfacing may help to stimulate the body to produce some pigment to blend the scar somewhat. Results are less predictable than with other types of scarring.

Great advances in hypertrophic scar treatment have been made in recent years. Our experienced dermatologists have the ability to perform this treatment in-office with our Active FX laser.
