What is Toe Nail Fungus?
This infection is caused by fungi infecting your nails. It spreads deep into your nail, causing yellow discoloration, deformation of the nail, and can cause pain. The infection is hard to clear and is generally recurring.
CAUSES
Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is caused by the overgrowth of fungi, typically dermatophytes, in or under the nail. This fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, such as locker rooms, public showers, or inside sweaty shoes. Other causes include yeast or mold infections. Fungi can invade through small cracks or cuts in the skin, leading to an infection in the toenails.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of toenail fungus include thickened, brittle, or crumbly nails that may become discolored (yellow, white, or brown). The affected nails may also develop irregular shape, become distorted, or lift from the nail bed. In more severe cases, the nail may become painful, emit an unpleasant odor, or cause inflammation of the surrounding skin.
