What are Stretchmarks?

Stretch marks can appear after losing weight, in areas of natural skin folding, and after periods of rapid growth. Many find these marks unsightly and various types of treatments are available to treat them.

CAUSES

Stretch marks, or striae, are caused by the rapid stretching of the skin, which results in the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers. This can occur due to growth spurts during puberty, pregnancy, significant weight gain or loss, or muscle growth from weight training. When the skin stretches too quickly, it loses its elasticity, leading to the appearance of these marks.

SYMPTOMS

Stretch marks appear as streaks or lines on the skin, typically in areas prone to rapid stretching, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, and arms. They often start as red, purple, or pink streaks and may feel slightly raised or itchy. Over time, they fade to a lighter, silvery color and become less noticeable, although they typically don’t disappear completely.

Treatments for Stretchmarks

The treatment we offer our Baltimore patients for stretch marks depends on whether the stretch marks are white or red. Different types of lasers can help reduce redness and blend the stretch marks. Studies continue at MDLSV on the treatment of this problem. Consultation can help determine what treatment is the best option.
