What are Benign Skin Growths?

There are many types of benign (not cancerous) skin growths that can become annoying over time. Skin tags, rough barnacle-like growths called keratoses, and elevated moles are common examples.

CAUSES

Benign skin growths are typically caused by abnormal cell growth in the skin, often due to genetic factors, environmental exposure (like sun damage), or the natural aging process. These growths can develop when cells multiply more than they should but do not become cancerous.

RISK FACTORS

Risk factors for benign skin growths include age (more common in older adults), prolonged sun exposure, a family history of similar growths, and certain skin types that are more prone to developing growths. Hormonal changes and skin trauma can also contribute to their development.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of benign skin growths vary depending on the type but generally include visible changes in the skin, such as small bumps, raised areas, or discoloration. These growths are usually painless and slow-growing, and they do not spread to other parts of the body. Examples include moles, skin tags, and seborrheic keratoses.

Treatments for Benign Skin Growths

Fortunately, treatments are available to help. These in-office procedures include cryosurgery (freezing), “snipping”, shave removal, and laser destruction. A consultation will help determine the best treatment plan.
