MDLSV Now Offering SculpSure

January 19, 2016
Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute is excited to offer a brand-new FDA approved device for non-invasive fat reduction. SculpSure by Cynosure is the first and only fat reduction technology using a hyperthermic laser. This laser is non-surgical, painless, and effective, using proprietary technology to disrupt adipose fat cells and reduce unwanted fat.

To learn more about this exciting new technology, don’t hesitate to contact the expert dermatologists at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein. To schedule your consultation and be one of the first in Baltimore to take advantage of SculpSure, just call 410-666-3960 today! Results may vary for each patient.

What is SculpSure?

SculpSure is the first non-invasive fat reduction technology of its kind. Unlike other fat reduction systems, such as liposuction, CoolSculpting, or Vanquish, SculpSure uses a hyperthermic laser to gently and effectively reduce the amount of fat cells in a given area through lipolysis. The treatment requires no downtime, and has been FDA cleared for reducing fat in the flanks.

A SculpSure procedure can be done in just 25 minutes, making it a great choice for people without a lot of time to spend on lengthy procedures. The flexible applicator allows it to treat multiple areas of the body quickly and efficiently. SculpSure technology disrupts subcutaneous fat cells, significantly reducing adipose layer thickness and resulting in a slimmer, sculpted body.

Who is a Candidate for SculpSure?

If you have areas of unwanted fat on the flanks, you could be a good candidate for SculpSure. Ideal candidates have a BMI of 30 or less, and are looking to contour the body, rather than lose weight. SculpSure is a not meant as a weight loss treatment, but rather to help get rid of areas of unwanted fat on the flanks.

SculpSure is currently only cleared by the FDA for use on the flanks, but Cynosure is pursuing clearance for use on the abdomen, and hope to utilize the technology for further areas of the body as well. Cynosure has long been known as a trusted and effective brand for minimally to non-invasive body sculpting devices.

New Year's Resolutions Won't Help Your Neck: Ultherapy Can!

January 15, 2016
2016 brings us our resolutions for improved fitness, health, nutrition, organization and wellness. But there are some things that weight loss and exercise just can’t help--like a sagging neck that makes you appear older than you are. There’s no better time to take advantage of the non-surgical, non-invasive skin tightening treatments like Ultherapy available at Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin, and Vein Institute.

What is a Turkey Neck?

The telltale signs of a “turkey neck” include sagging, folded skin under your chin and around your neck. As we get older, the delicate skin of the face and neck can become thinner, losing elasticity and volume as the body naturally produces less and less collagen and elastin. The muscles may even soften, emphasizing the rolls, banding and wrinkles that gradually sag more and more over time.

How Does Ultherapy Improve Turkey Neck?

Ultherapy is the only non-surgical, FDA approved skin tightening device available to treat thinning, sagging skin around the chin and neck. Using non-invasive ultrasound waves to target the deep layers of skin tissue, Ultherapy triggers the body's natural collagen and elastin production, allowing the skin to naturally regain lift. Improved treatment protocols for Ultherapy have improved its breakthrough results. Not only that, combination treatment with injectable muscle relaxers like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin greatly enhances the results of Ultherapy by softening the harsh banding of neck muscles that affect so many. MDLSV specializes in additional types of treatment to further improve the aged neck, such as noninvasive photorejuvenation and noninvasive fat reduction.,

Schedule an Ultherapy Consultation for a Better Neck in 2016!

If you are suffering from a sagging neck, don’t hesitate to contact Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein to learn more about Ultherapy and whether it can help you. To schedule your appointment, just call 410-666-3960 today!

Dr. Robert Weiss Discusses the Importance of Using Sunscreen

Sunscreen is important in reducing your risk of skin cancer and also can help prevent signs of aging such as sun spots or age spots. Wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher daily and SPF 30 or higher when outdoors for prolonged periods of time is important to protect your skin.
"During the winter we lose some pigment in our skin, so we're more susceptible to UV ray damage come spring," says Dr. Robert Weiss. "It's extra important to be vigilant about sunscreen right now."

MDLSV offers several sun protection products for sell in our online store. Our dermatologists also offer several treatments for reducing the appearance of sun damage.

Advantages of Restylane Lyft

Facial aging is a process that begins in the 20’s and continues throughout life due to physiological changes of the skin and underlying tissue. Personal and environmental factors can accelerate these changes, giving an impression of aging caused by wrinkling and skin atrophy. An innovative new treatment recently developed takes facial rejuvenation to a whole new level, not only treating wrinkles and overall skin deterioration, but considered the only product with indication for cheek lifts and nasolabial folds.

Restylane Lyft is an injectable filler that adds volume beneath the skin’s surface to lift the skin and soften wrinkles and folds. Nasolabial folds, also known as smile lines, are quite common and significantly add to an aged appearance. Restylane Lyft is injected directly into the skin in small, measured amounts by an ultrafine needle that allows minimal discomfort. A Restylane Lyft procedure is simple and convenient and the results are practically instantaneous. This procedure is so simple it can literally be performed during your lunch hour. However, the results are dramatically younger looking skin.

In addition to treating signs of aging like nasolabial folds, Restylane Lyft has recently been found to have major affects in cheek lifts. Restylane Lyft is capable of creating well-defined cheeks, creating balance, improved facial profile, and an overall more youthful appearance. Facial volume is often lost with age but improvement is possible.

How the Aging Process is Accelerated

There are a number of factors that accelerate the aging process, including:

  • Smoking

  • Genetic predisposition

  • Emotional stress

  • Diseases

  • Dramatic changes in weight

  • Exposure to extreme sun, cold temperatures or wind

Restylane Lyft is made up of FDA-approved products made with naturally occurring substances. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for keeping skin smooth and “plump” in your younger years, but over time it is broken down by the aging process. Restylane Lyft contains a form of stabilized hyaluronic acid, as well as elastin, a protein found in the skin and tissue of the body capable of returning skin to its normal shape after a pull, and collagen, another protein that is the main structural component of the lower layer of the skin. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s strength, but, like Hyaluronic acid and elastin, collagen stops being produced as rapidly in the skin over time.

Benefits of Restylane Lyft

Receiving a Restylane Lyft treatment is particularly beneficial to patients because it does not require surgery. Surgeries typically leave patients swollen for weeks and take months for the final results to be revealed. Restylane Lyft treatments can be done quickly and effectively and final results occur almost instantaneously. Restylane Lyft also offers a lowered risk of complication and infection, verses facial implants.

June is Acne Awareness Month!

June 4, 2015
Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S., affecting 40-50 million people, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne scarring can make you feel self-conscious and can lead to a lack of self-esteem. With the number of adults with acne growing, MDLSV is offering the following helpful tips and treatment considerations in honor of June' Acne Awareness Month.
  • Adopt a daily routine: Good skin is a daily commitment and gentle skin cleansing or application of acne medications should be part of a morning and evening routine.
  • Know fact from fiction: There are several myths involving acne and acne scarring. For example, while tan skin may hide the redness of acne, it does not help clear it up. In fact, exposure to the UV rays can cause skin cancer and premature aging. Another misconception is that stress causes acne. Stress and hormones may be a factor in producing acne, but there are no studies that have been able to definitively prove this link.
  • Explore treatment options: From skin resurfacing to chemical peels, schedule a consultation with MDLSV to review the latest treatments that can improve acne scarring or treat acne.
  • Don't let acne trap you: For some individuals, acne and acne scarring can have emotional consequences, such as feelings of self-consciousness or lack of self-esteem. Take advantage of one our several safe and effective acne treatment options that can help you look and feel better.

Melanoma Cases Have Doubled in the US in the Past 30 Years

June 3, 2015
According to the Los Angeles Times's "Science Now" blog, "the incidence of melanoma... has doubled in the U.S. in the last 30 years". These rates are projected to remain high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unless Americans take more precautions to protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation. Since skin cancer is among the deadliest of all cancers, MDLSV offers several sun protection products at our online store to keep all our patients healthy and melanoma-free.

5 Questions about CoolSculpting

December 22, 2014

What is CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a revolutionary procedure for non-surgical fat reduction. At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein and its MD Body Sculpting Center, our team actually helped in pioneering this important new technology and played a role in the FDA clearance process. As a result, this gentle and non-invasive method for reducing unwanted fat deposits is now readily available across the country. The MD Body Sculpting CenterMDLSV also offers the new DualSculpting treatment method, which utilizes two CoolSculpting machines simultaneously to provide patients with fat reduction on multiple areas of the body in a fraction of the time.

What’s the science behind CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting freezes fat cells in order to kill them. The scientific process is called cryolipolysis, a hybrid of cryogenic lipolysis. Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive method of tissue cooling that can effectively target and reduce stubborn fat deposits that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. This process is safe and effective for natural body contouring.

What are the benefits of CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting has many major benefits. It’s non-invasive, requires no anesthesia and has no risk of blood loss or complications. It doesn’t require any needles or cuts, and the entire process usually has only slight discomfort, if any. You may feel a sensation of intense cold at the start of the treatment, but this disappears quickly as the targeted area is numbed. During the procedure, you can relax and listen to music, read, and even do work on your laptop. DualSculpting has the added benefit of freezing more areas of unwanted fat in less time with less treatment sessions, cutting the time in half.

What are the side effects of CoolSculpting?

There is little to no downtime after a CoolSculpting treatment. Generally, patients can return to their everyday activities immediately afterward. Side effects are usually minimal and may include redness, minor bruising, or numbness of the skin. These typically subside within just a few days.  Rarely, people may have some discomfort after extensive treatment.

Am I a candidate for CoolSculpting?

It’s important to have a thorough consultation with a board-certified, trusted dermatologist physician before making the decision to have any procedure performed. At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein and the MD Body Sculpting Center, our team of expert board-certified dermatologists will listen to your concerns and work with you to come up with the best plan of action. Typically, CoolSculpting is best for people who have specific areas of fat deposits that simply haven’t responded to diet and exercise.

Many areas of the body, mainly in the abdomen and love handles, develop fat bulges over time that can be particularly difficult to get rid of completely through diet and exercise alone. If you are looking for a weight loss treatment or to smooth out cellulite, CoolSculpting may not be the right procedure for you. However, if you are frustrated by a particular area of stubborn fat that doesn’t seem to be responding to your efforts, you may want to look into CoolSculpting or DualSculpting as a potential solution!

Schedule a consultation today at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein!

To find out more about this revolutionary treatment or to schedule a consultation with one of our expert dermatologists, call 410.666.3960 today! Our doctors are all highly skilled and board-certified, with many years of experience and expertise. We will work with you to come up with the best solution to suit your needs.

Botox, fillers or laser treatments may have low complications risk

November 12, 2014
A new article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) discusses potential low risks for Botox, Fillers, or Laser Treatments. When researchers examined the results of over 20,000 procedures performed by board certified dermatologists they found that there were no major complications less than one percent had minor complications such as such as bruising, swelling, redness, bumpiness or skin darkening.
Here's a link to the Web MD overview on the safety of minor cosmetic procedures.
