Continued Steps We Are Taking To Protect Our Patients
May 8, 2020As medical professionals, we are trained to place the well-being and safety of our patients above all else, and that commitment to your health and safety is driving every decision made during this challenging time. We are closely monitoring all developments related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), and we are strictly adhering to all guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and our local and state governments.
Our pledge to patients is to be here for care you know is essential. Patients and practices are now free to elect necessary medical services and procedures that may have been delayed. We will continue to provide a safe and comforting office experience for all patients needing dermatologic services.
Though restrictions are easing, we remain committed to ongoing safety and prevention of illness transmission. You need to know what our clinic sites are doing to protect everyone:
- Everyone must wear a face mask. Patients may wear cloth masks and should have them on when they come into the office. Masks are required for adults and minor patients. Wearing a mask may prevent the spread of small droplets, so please follow our lead and wear a mask throughout the visit whenever possible.
- Everyone must wash hands or use hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the office. Please use the sanitizer provided, as you see our staff and providers doing. It is the most helpful prevention measure in the infection control arsenal! Hand sanitizer, tissues, and lined trash receptacles may be found in every waiting area and clinic room for use by our patients.
- Patients must be screened at each visit for fever and flu symptoms. We perform the same screenings for every staff member, every day. Anyone with a fever or flu symptoms will be asked to reschedule the appointment. Patients with special risk, such as persons over 65 or persons with chronic health conditions, may wish to stay at home and use our convenient telehealth program.
- Patients will notice posters at the office about COVID-19. These are meant to educate and advise about how to limit the spread of the virus. Every member of our staff has also received CDC generated written educational information about COVID-19, and about personal protective equipment. Policies and postings are changed as guidelines evolve.
- Special physical distancing measures are now being taken, so please be patient with us when we do not get close to you or shake your hand. Please understand when we limit numbers in reception areas or we ask you to wait in the car to prevent office congestion. Please do not bring children under 12 or any others with you when you come for a visit. No one other than the patient and a required caregiver may be in the office. Sometimes these safety practices will add to the time it takes to complete your visit. Thanks for your understanding that our practices are meant to keep you safe and healthy.
- We have always prided ourselves on a clean, safe office environment. Now more than ever, cleaning and disinfection is of paramount importance. EPA registered cleaning materials are used frequently throughout the day on all surfaces in exam rooms, waiting areas, labs, and office spaces. High touch surfaces like door handles, exam chairs and tables, and restrooms are given special attention.
- Our waiting areas no longer offer magazines, pamphlets, or children’s toys, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.
Be assured we remain fully prepared to evaluate and care for all of our patients, and we are taking all possible precautions to protect our patients, their families, our staff, and our communities. Thank you for your support and cooperation with these efforts as, together, we face this unprecedented public health challenge.

Meet the Injector - Karen Beasley, M.D., F.A.A.D.
February 25, 2019
Dr. Karen Beasley is a Board-Certified Dermatologist and Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Beasley has over 20 years of injecting experience at Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute and has been deemed an Expert Injector.
- What should I expect from my injector?
You should expect your injector to be a board-certified dermatologist with advanced training in aesthetic procedures and have many years’ experience in using cosmetic injectables. For example, I have over 20 years of experience using cosmetic injectables and since my practice is aesthetic in nature, I also spend a large part of my day performing these procedures. Patient safety, reliable results and patient education are the most important points that the injector should be focused on. Only unadulterated, legally purchased, FDA approved products should be injected.
- What is the most popular area you treat?
The most popular area that I treat is the cheek area. Cheeks are injected to lift the face and create a more youthful contour. It also helps to replace lost volume from the aging process and it also reduces nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines) and helps lift the eye area.
- What is your favorite area to inject?
My favorite area to inject are the lips. I like to individualize the plan for each patient and keep the results very natural looking.
Dr. Karen Beasley is currently accepting new cosmetic patients. To schedule a consultation, please call our office at 410-666-3960.
Lip Exfoliation 101
February 22, 2019
Winter has come and so have dry, chapped lips. Combat these lips by treating your lips right and exfoliating. The skin that makes up the lips is very thin, thinner and more delicate than other skin on the body. Because of this, moisture evaporates more quickly and dries the skin out, leaving the lips rough and blistered. Additionally, lips don’t have sebaceous glands which help keep the skin hydrated. Since the skin has no means of natural exfoliation, the skin continues to build up and crack, especially during the winter when there is already little moisture in the air.
To help this, use a soft toothbrush and lip scrub mixture to exfoliate the dead skin off once a week. Follow the exfoliation with a rich lip balm that contains SPF 30 or greater to hydrate the lips back up. Make sure to not exfoliate too hard and leave the lips red and raw. Exfoliating and moisturizing will help the lips from dryness, swelling, burning and bleeding.

Lip Fillers 101
February 5, 2019
Lip fillers are a great, non-surgical procedure to enhance your natural look. Since 2000, lip injections have shown staggering growth and increased popularity. Over time, the lips and lines around the mouth thin and lose their shape. Both Restylane® and Juvéderm® are popular dermal filler brands that help add volume and are hyaluronic acid based. Read more below about the common lip fillers from both the Restylane® and Juvéderm® families.
Restylane® created Restylane®¬ Silk, a FDA-approved dermal filler designed for lip augmentation and smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Restylane® Silk adds fullness in the center of the lips, defines the cupid’s bow and helps overall symmetry for an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Results are seen within a few days after the procedure. Patients can swell at first due to the lidocaine but the swelling subsides within a few days. Results from Restylane®¬ Silk typically last 10 months.
Restylane® Silk is the first ever FDA approved dermal filler for lip enhancement in patients over the age of 21 and has been on the market since 2015. Patients should talk to their provider if they have a history of allergies to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid, bleeding disorders or anaphylaxis. ¬ Restylane® Silk is only available through a licensed provider. Minor side effects include:
- Skin color changes (hyperpigmentation)
Juvéderm has two popular options for lip fillers: Juvéderm® Ultra XC, and Juvéderm® Volbella XC. Both are FDA approved for lip augmentation. Juvéderm® Ultra XC adds more fullness and plumps thin lips, regardless of if your lips have thinned over time or if you just want fuller lips. Juvéderm® Ultra XC also helps with smoothness, softness and overall structure of the lips and mouth. Juvéderm® Volbella XC is a soft, smooth gel injectable which adds subtle volume to the lips and smooths vertical lip lines. Additionally, Juvéderm® Volbella XC helps add fullness to already great lip-structure and smooths and improves texture of the overall lips. Both Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Juvéderm® Volbella XC have been shown to last up to a year with optimal treatment. Results are seen more instantly with both Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Juvéderm® Volbella XC, but full effects can be seen within a few days after treatment. Similar to Restylane® Silk, Patients can swell at first due to the lidocaine but the swelling subsides within a few days.
Juvéderm® Ultra XC was FDA approved in 2011 as a dermal filler, and became FDA approved for the lip augmentation in 2015 for patients over 21. Juvéderm® Volbella XC gained FDA approval in 2016 for use in the lips for lip augmentation and for correction of perioral lines in adults over the age of 21. Patients should talk to their provider if they have a history of allergies to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid, bleeding disorders or anaphylaxis. ¬ Both Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Juvéderm® Volbella XC are only available through a licensed provider. Like Restylane®, there are minor side effects to Juvéderm® lip injections, which include:
- Skin color changes (hyperpigmentation)
At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute, we offer both Restylane® and Juvéderm® family dermal fillers. To schedule your appointment and see which dermal fillers are right for you, please visit our website or call us at 410-666-3960.
Fat Reduction Treatments
January 30, 2019
We’re taking a deeper dive into two of the most common fat reduction treatments available, Liposuction and CoolSculpting.
LiposuctionLiposuction is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures, with over 235,000 procedures done yearly in the United States. It is a surgical approach to removing excess, unwanted fat and improve body contouring. For years, Liposuction was the only way to remove those fatty deposits and reshape the body.
CoolSculptingWhile Liposcution is still one of the most popular aesthetic surgical procedures, there are now less invasive options available. “The new techniques are non-invasive and they don’t involve surgery or anesthesia, so there’s really no downtime. It’s walk-in, walk-out, and the amount of pain involved is minimal,” says Robert Weiss, MD, Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD), of Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute. Dr. Weiss was a key leader and researcher of the CoolSculpting procedure. He conducted clinical trials at his office in Hunt Valley, MD for FDA approval.
CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis to specifically target fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue. The body naturally disposes of the fat cells and results emerge 4-6 weeks post procedure.
“Common areas we treat are the abdomen, under the bra line, and the inner thigh,” Dr. Weiss adds. At present, the FDA-cleared treatment areas include: abdomen, flanks, thighs, submental (chin), underneath and buttock (banana roll), upper arm, bra bulge and back fat. An added benefit of CoolSculpting is the different size applicators for different body areas, so there is more patient customization.
Healthy LifestyleWhile both Liposuction and CoolSculpting help remove pockets of fat, neither are a weight loss alternative. “These non-invasive methods to remove fat are really for stubborn pockets of fat. They’re really not a method of weight loss, we still recommend proper diet and exercise.” States Dr. Weiss. It is important to note that both CoolSculpting and Liposuction are not FDA-cleared for an excess of skin and laxity.
Interested in CoolSculpting and other non-surgical body contouring procedures? Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute is home to the MD Body Sculpting Center, a state of the art facility designed for Body Contouring and Tightening along with Reduction of unwanted Fat and Cellulite. How to Protect your Skin this Winter
January 11, 2019
Winter is here! Prepare correctly this winter with both sunscreen and moisturizer and save your skin from feeling dry and chapped.
Sunscreen While most people are diligent with sunscreen in the summer months, we tend to forget to lather up during the winter. Apply SPF 30 or greater to face and body and re-apply every two hours– especially if you’re hitting the slopes. Use a more emollient sunscreen which will sooth and help combat dry, flakey skin. Winter sports such as skiing, snowboarding, snow-tubing and hiking are at an increased exposure to harmful UVA/UVB rays. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV light from the sun, exposing you to the same rays twice. Additionally, for every 1,000 feet above sea level, UV radiation increases 4-5% to include UVC and up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds – this is because thinner atmospheres don’t block as many harmful UV-rays.
Moisturizer Prepare your skin for the cold, winter months by using a moisturizer. During the winter, the cold, low-humidity air can dry the skin out – leaving the skin chapped. This combination leads to tightness and dullness of the skin, leaving the skin with fine lines and wrinkles. A good moisturizer should be repairing and help supply the lipid barrier and other functions of the skin. During the winter, people tend to switch to a more emollient moisturizer that is better suited for these harsh winter conditions. Ingredients to look for are ceramides, hyaluronic acid and glycerin as those ingredients help to keep skin hydrated and supple. Niacinamide also minimizes the appearance of dry or damaged skin and restores suppleness. Look for an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer to help with oil overproduction. Ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids and salicylic acid stimulate cell turnover and also aid in anti-aging.
Don’t forget about the rest of your body, and your lips! Some people use two different types of moisturizers: one for their face and a different for the body. Use a lip balm that has at least SPF 30 and re-apply as needed to lock in moisture and keep lips hydrated.
Here at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute, we offer skin care products and complimentary skin care consultations to best fit your specific needs. To schedule a consultation or discuss skin care products, visit our contact page or call us at 410.666.3960.
January 8, 2019
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical body contouring procedure that freezes away fat using cryolipolisis technology. The specific technology delivers a controlled cooling, focusing only on destroying unwanted fat cells and leaves the skin above unaffected. The body naturally gets rid of the frozen fat cells after the treatment is performed. The procedure is safe and effective with minimal discomfort and noticeable results. More than 7 million CoolSculpting procedures have been performed worldwide.
Know what to Expect
CoolSculpting has been FDA cleared for nine treatment areas, including abdomen, upper arms, flanks/sides, double chins, inner thighs, and outer thighs. The procedure typically takes one hour per area and is virtually pain free. A gel pad applicator is applied to the area and the cooling starts immediately, with the cool feeling subsiding after 5-10 minutes. Most patients are able to read a book, watch television or take a nap during their treatment.
Little to no Downtime
CoolSculpting is an excellent alternative to surgery. The procedure is very popular among both men and women with busy schedules, as there is little to no downtime required. Once the procedure is completed patients are able to return to their normal everyday activities.
Feel Good in your Skin
CoolSculpting gives men and women the power to feel more comfortable in their own skin. The procedure is most effective on patients who are at or close to their ideal weight, but who have stubborn pockets of fat that don’t go away with diet and exercise. As with all body contouring procedures, the best results are seen in combination with a healthy lifestyle. Patients may see results as early as three weeks after their first treatment, with full results three months after their final treatment*.
*Results may vary for each patient.
The Best Clothing for Winter Skin
January 3, 2019
The material in your clothing has a direct impact on your skin – especially in the winter.
The best clothing for winter skin is made from soft fabrics that won’t irritate or cause skin to become dry and itchy.
Clothing made from wool is a popular choice during the winter months because of its thickness and warmth. However, it’s also notoriously itchy and can dry out and irritate skin.
If you do wear wool, incorporate a thin cotton underlayer to protect your skin from irritation.
Gloves are an essential part of a winter wardrobe to help keep skin healthy. Wear gloves anytime you go outdoors or perform tasks that will get your hands wet.
Wear Breathable Layers
The environment we’re in or the tasks we are performing will cause our body temperature to change. Wear breathable layers of cotton clothing to prevent skin from becoming too hot or too cold. Layers can be removed or add as needed to keep body temperature even and prevent skin from becoming irritated.
Start with a thin cotton underlayer that will help wick away any moisture from perspiration and prevent chaffing, then add more thin layers over the underlayer. Several thin layers of clothing are better than a couple of thick layers.
Soft, synthetic fleece will keep feet warm without irritating the skin. Socks can be layered if needed. Start with thin cotton socks and layer a pair of fleece or wool over them.
An overcoat of some type is essential during winter to keep skin from being exposed to frigid air. The material of an overcoat matters less, since it won’t be in direct contact with skin.
Top It Off
Top off your winter clothing choices with a hat and scarf to prevent your body from losing heat from exposed skin. A scarf wrapped around the neck and hat that covers the ears will keep these skin areas from becoming red and chapped, plus your body will stay warmer.
Scarf and hat sets are stylish and can make an attractive winter fashion statement while preventing dry, winter skin.
Winter Skin Awareness
December 31, 2018Winter weather can wreak havoc on your skin. While the days are shorter, and the sun is less present in winter, it does not mean that your skin is any less vulnerable to damage. Fabrics designed to keep you warm can also cause your skin to become aggravated. And some cleansers only work against your skin in the winter, leaving it dry and irritated.
These topics and more will be covered throughout January and February. Check back frequently for more in-depth coverage on winter skin conditions and tips, and follow us on social media for up-to-date content, contests and giveaways!

Daily Skin Care Regimen and Post-Procedure Care
November 21, 2018
A skin care regimen is important to keep you looking young and healthy. Whether you are looking for a product to treat a skin condition or are in need of a light cream to help with the healing process after a recent procedure, you’ll find multiple options in skin care products at both our online store and our office.
It is never too early to start a routine that includes preventative measures against aging and sun damage. While reversing the signs of aging and sun damage is possible, it is much easier to prevent. A consultation with a dermatologist can help you find the best products for your skin type and aesthetic goals. Depending on your skin tone, type, and exactly what you are looking to treat, our dermatologists may recommend a cleanser, a moisturizer, a wrinkle cream, a brown spot corrector, or a combination of products.
A cleanser, such as Restorsea Pro Foaming Cleanser, will clean the skin, removing impurities such as dirt and oil as well as makeup. A moisturizer, like Skin Medica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer, will help maintain your skin’s natural glow with Vitamin C and E and hydrate any dry, patchy areas by using hyaluronic acid to bind moisture to the skin. A wrinkle cream, similar to NeoCutis Bio-Restorative Cream, can reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as improve skin texture and firmness. To correct age and brown spots, our dermatologists may recommend a product like Restorsea Pro Intensive Treatment 10X, a non-irritating alternative to retinols that reduces the appearance of brown spots.
If you have just had a treatment, adherence to a skin care regimen is also important. Skin care products can help in the healing process as well as supplement the results of the treatment. Our dermatologists can provide you with a post-treatment care that will be best for your needs and overall aesthetic goals.
You can view all the products we have available on our online store. Starting November 26th, 2018 receive 20% off all skincare products with free shipping using code 20pawsale to celebrate our Patient Appreciation Week! Offer will be valid until December 7th, 2018 with orders beginning to ship on December 3rd. If you are interested in a skin consultation call our office at 410-666-3960 today!
Varicose and Spider Veins
October 17, 2018
Varicose and spider veins can be an unsightly and sometimes painful condition that affects both men and women, young and old. Red and blue spider veins can begin to appear as early as the teenage years and bulging varicose veins can happen after pregnancy or with age. Both spider and varicose veins can most commonly be attributed to heredity, hormones, pregnancy, or standing for long periods of time. Luckily, if you are affected by either varicose or spider veins, both are treatable. Drs. Robert and Margaret Weiss and Dr. Karen Beasley have all authored numerous textbooks about vein treatment and frequently lecture on the subject at international meetings.
The expert dermatologists at Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute offer the following options in the treatment of varicose and spider veins.
- Sclerotherapy (link) – This treatment has been considered a top option for many years for the reduction and elimination of spider leg veins and small varicose leg veins. Sclerotherapy involves a sclerosing solution (Aslcera®) injected into the target vein to dissolve the vein from the inside. After the vein is dissolved the body naturally eliminates what is left.
- VenaSeal (link) – This treatment has the newest FDA approval for the non-invasive treatment of varicose veins on the legs. Using a tiny catheter that is inserted into the vein, VenaSeal deposits medical glue to seal the vein shut. This process allows the body to naturally eliminate the vein by automatically rerouting the blood flow to the surrounding healthy veins.
- CoolTouch Varia (link) – While Sclerotherapy and VenaSeal are great options for veins located on the leg, smaller, more superficial veins on the face need to be treated with a more delicate technique. CoolTouch Varia is a laser that uses a series of gentle pulses to penetrate the skin and heat the underlying tissue, effectively treating blue spider veins on the face.
- CoolTouch CTEV (link) – The CoolTouch CTEV is used for the treatment of larger varicose veins and has generally replaced painful vein stripping surgery. This minimally invasive treatment uses a small needle incision to insert a fiber into the vein. The inserted fiber is then moved through the vein, heating and safely closing it. This process reroutes blood flow to the surrounding healthy veins, allowing the vein to eventually heal itself.
- V-Beam Perfecta (link) – This is another treatment that can be used on the more delicate areas such as the face. V-Beam Perfecta is a pulsed dye laser that selectively absorbs laser energy to heat and shrink problem tissue. Diminishing the need for an anesthetic, V Beam Perfecta uses a patented cooling technology to protect surrounding skin.
If you would like to see more before and after pictures and amazing videos of veins instantly disappearing, follow the social media account of Dr. Robert Weiss, known as the “Vein Terminator.” You can follow him on Instagram (@veinterminator) or his Twitter account (Dr_Weiss).
Unsightly and painful veins shouldn’t be a condition you just have to “deal with.” There is a way to live a life varicose and spider vein free! Call MDLSV today and schedule a consultation with one of our expert dermatologists to determine which vein treatment is right for you!

NovaThreads at MDLSV
July 19, 2018Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute now offers NovaThreads! NovaThreads are the newest innovation in non-surgical facial rejuvenation technology. A NovaThreads procedure uses absorbable sutures that are inserted into the lower face to lift and tighten sagging skin. While NovaThreads are not intended to completely replace a facelift, they can postpone or even prevent a patient from needing a more invasive facelift in the future. Unlike a traditional facelift, with this procedure there is no surgery or recovery time and the results can be immediate.
NovaThreads utilize small hypodermic needles that are preloaded with a synthetic absorbable surgical suture composed of polydioxanone (PDO). PDO sutures are among the safest materials to be implanted in the body because the skin fully absorbs them within 4 to 6 months without leaving any scar tissue. The threads are inserted in the skin, lifted and absorbed over time as new collagen forms. NovaThreads use two different techniques to lift and tighten sagging skin – NovaMesh and NovaLyft.
NovaMesh involves creating a crisscrossed pattern of threads beneath the skin, stimulating the tissue beneath to produce new collagen around the mesh. Results from this technique occur gradually as the skin produces collagen and the mesh is absorbed.
NovaLyft involves a more dramatic technique with more immediate results. The sutures are lined with small cogs in order to grip the tissue beneath the skin. The sutures are then pulled upward for instant repositioning of the skin. As the sutures are absorbed, new collagen is produced, anchoring the skin in the uplifted position.
Please contact our office to schedule a consultation about NovaThreads today!

EMSculpt by BTL: The Newest Innovation in Body Sculpting
April 24, 2018BTL Aesthetics has released the newest innovation in non-invasive body sculpting: EMSculpt. While current body sculpting treatments address the fat and skin, EMSculpt improves the tone and shape as well. This new treatment is designed for both women and men, treating the stomach area and is the world’s first non-invasive butt lift procedure.
EMSculpt works by using High-Intensity Focused Electro-Magnetic (HIFEM) technology to induce supramaximal muscle contractions. Signals are sent to the brain that an extreme amount of energy is going to be needed to supply these contractions and the release of epinephrine is increased. This results in supramaximal lipolysis (a breakdown of fats). When exposed to supramaximal contractions the muscle tissue is forced to adapt to extreme conditions and responds by remodeling the inner muscles. Supramaximal contractions also cause an enhanced adrenaline release, which triggers an intensive lipolysis response in fat cells. Due to the supramaximal nature of these contractions, the lipolytic response is so extreme that the free fatty acids start accumulating within the fat cells, leading to cellular dysfunction.
The EMSculpt treatment requires no pre or post treatment preparation and there is zero downtime after treatment. Patient begin to feel results right after the treatment with positive results being seen two to four weeks after the last session and continuing improvement over the next few weeks.
The dermatologists at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute were pioneers in developing and perfecting this technology over the last 2 years and is the first practice in Maryland to offer EMSculpt. Be among the first to schedule your EMSculpt appointment by calling our office at 410-666-3960.

Skin Cancer - Good Luck to Governor Hogan
February 2, 2018All of us at MD Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein Institute wish our Governor of Maryland, Mr. Larry Hogan, a speedy recovery from his minor surgery scheduled for February 3, 2018, for recently diagnosed skin cancers: basal and squamous cell carcinoma. He is in excellent hands with an expert board-certified dermatologist in Annapolis.
Mr. Hogan ‘s skin cancers were found during an annual skin examination by his dermatologist. He admits that his love of the sun and having a dark tan during his summers as a young lifeguard contributed to these growths. Mr. Hogan never wore sunscreen in his youth, but he says he’ll be handing out tubes of SPF 50 wherever he goes now!

Spectra Laser, the Hollywood Laser Peel
January 16, 2018
Many celebrities use a little secret to help obtain those flawless complexions that you see on the Hollywood red carpet: the Hollywood Peel. Using innovative Spectra Laser with carbon lotion, the Hollywood Peel improves skin tone and texture, reduces fine lines, and stimulates natural collagen production resulting in glowing, youthful looking skin.
The Hollywood Peel works by targeting the melanin (pigmentation) in the cells and breaking it up to be removed naturally by the body. Then, the laser heats deeper into the dermis, causing the skin to contract and stimulate collagen. The Spectra laser is passed over the skin after the Spectra carbon lotion is applied. Patients will hear snapping noises and feel a slight tingling and warmth, but most patients report little to no pain during treatment. The entire treatment lasts as little as 30 minutes and you can immediately return to your regular daily activities.
This peel is often used by celebrities in preparation for the red carpet, which is where it got its name, but has most recently become widely popular among brides, patients who have an event to attend, or patients who are looking for more youthful skin and an improved complexion. The Hollywood Peel is gentle enough to be performed every other week, monthly, or just once for a special event.
For the month of January the Hollywood Peel is on promotion at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute for $375 (normally $475). If you are interested in the Hollywood Peel call 410-666-3960 to schedule a skin consultation today!

Smooth, Hydrated Skin for the Holidays
December 20, 2017This time of year many are so focused on preparing for the holidays that they neglect to pay attention to what the colder weather is doing to their skin. Unfortunately, if you don’t make the changes to your skincare routine necessary to protect your skin from the bitter cold it can dry out, flake, and crack. Fortunately, the board certified dermatologists and team at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute offer multiple treatments and skincare products to fight off dry, winter skin. They also offer treatments that can help your skin look refreshed and more youthful.
SilkPeel Dermalinfusion The SilkPeel combines non-invasive exfoliation with deep delivery of patient-specific solutions directly to the skin without the use of crystal or other chemical exfoliants. It removes dead and flaking skin cells and stimulates the production of fresh young skin cells and collagen. It is a great advancement in non-invasive, non-surgical, skin conditioning.
Vivant ProPeel Vivant ProPeel is a safe and effective chemical peel used to dramatically improve the appearance skin. ProPeel removes dead skin cells and stimulates cell regeneration, collagen, and elastin growth in the deep layers of the skin, revealing clearer, more youthful skin.
Avene Trixera Balm Avene Trixera Balm is a daily moisturizer that provides 24 hour hydration, preventing moisture loss for moderately to very dry skin.
Avene Akerat Cream This full body cream uses salicylic acid to remove thick, flaky skin and lactic acid to moisturize. Avene Akerat Cream smooths and retexturizes extremely rough, dry skin.
Skinceuticals Retexturing Activator This serum promotes proper exfoliation without drying the skin. It balances moisture levels by using hyaluronic acid as a natural humectant to bind the moisture to the skin.
It is important to remember to use a mild cleanser to avoid skin irritation and to thoroughly moisturize your skin directly after a shower.

Silhouette Instalift, Non-Surgical Facelift
November 8, 2017Silhouette Instalift is offered at the Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute as an alternative to invasive surgical facelifts. With this procedure, you can look your best for this upcoming holiday season without sacrificing your busy schedule to recovery time!
For the Instalift procedure, our board certified dermatologists use sutures with bidirectional cones to lift the deeper layers of skin. The result is a naturally smoother, more youthful look. The entire procedure is done in our office and takes as little as 45 minutes. The results are immediate and recovery time is minimal.
The procedure is comfortable and requires only local anesthesia. In addition to the immediate lifting effect, over time the sutures stimulate your body’s natural collagen production which helps provide additional structure to the skin. The sutures are gradually absorbed within 2-3 years.

Face and Hand Rejuvenation by PRP Now Offered at MDLSV: Improved Skin Quality through Application of Platelet-Rich Plasma
September 13, 2017For patients seeking a minimally invasive way to restore a youthful facial and hand appearance, a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) procedure at the Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute is the latest option for skin rejuvenation. A quick 20-minute procedure, sometimes referred to as the “vampire facial,” PRP treatments involve withdrawing blood from a patient, separating out the blood’s plasma and platelets from red blood cells and then applying the platelet-rich plasma to the face. PRP can be applied topically after microneedling or laser treatments for enhanced results. The treatment can also be injected for scalp hair loss especially for female pattern hair loss.
An advantage of this procedure is no risk of allergy (as what’s being injected is the patient’s own blood, containing the person’s own growth factors). PRP treatments can work well for anyone looking to reduce fine lines, volume loss and textural changes to facial skin. Results from treatment may be subtle, gradually improving the look of the face over a three to five week period following treatment. Full results can usually be seen by week’s four to seven and can last as long as 18 months. For best results, patients receive a total of two to three treatments, each given three to four months apart.
To learn more about the PRP treatments available at Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin & Vein Institute, as well as other skin rejuvenation treatments we offer, contact us to set up your complimentary consultation.
Dr. Cindy Bae Appears on Today Show

August 16, 2017Microneedling treatments use tiny micro needles to stimulate the skin’s natural formation of collagen and elastin. Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute has had very good results in the treatment of acne scars, large pores, and poor skin texture with the Collagen P.I.N. and Aquagold. With Aquagold, tiny amounts of injectable hyaluronic acid can be infused into the skin.
MDLSV also offers radiofrequency microneedling, which provides deep delivery of the time-tested technique of radiofrequency tissue via microneedles. Uniquely, MDLSV offers three types of RF microneedling: INTRAcel RF Microneedling, Infini, and the Endymed Intensif. These devices target damaged or aged areas of skin through rapid penetration of micro-needles that deliver radiofrequency energy to the appropriate level. The device can be used for treating acne and acne scarring because the treatment kills acne-worsening bacteria in the skin in addition to stimulating the production of collagen to improve scars.
Microneedling treatments with INTRAcel RF can give your skin a smooth, youthful glow.* The INTRAcel RF Microneedling offers improved treatment penetration due to its mono polar technology. The procedure is generally more comfortable than other devices and is performed with only topical anesthesia. It is safe for all skin types.
INTRAcel RF Microneedling treats:
- Acne Scarring
- Various Skin Irregularities
- Large Pores
- General Rejuvenation
- The reduction of Stretch Marks
* Treatment results vary for each patient.

Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute Conducting Clinical Research Study on Potential New Treatment for Crow’s FeetMarch 4, 2016
Cosmetic dermatologists from the Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute (MDLSV) are currently seeking volunteers for an investigational topical gel to non-invasively treat crow’s feet.
An aging population, coupled with the desire to prevent premature aging among younger men and women has led to the development of many highly effective, non-surgical cosmetic options to treat some of the most stubborn signs of aging, without the need for some of the more invasive traditional plastic surgery procedures used a generation ago. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently given its stamp of approval to a range of minimally invasive injectable and body contouring treatments.
“At MDLSV, we make it our mission to offer men and women the most advanced cosmetic treatments available to help achieve their personal goals, whether it’s to restore volume to the cheeks and minimize frown lines, or to help reduce the hard to treat double chin,” said board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robert Weiss, director of Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein. “As part of our commitment to offering our patients the best dermatology services and treatments on the market, we regularly participate in clinical trials and conduct clinical research for new products. We are currently seeking volunteers for a topical gel designed to target crow’s feet, which can often be the first sign of aging for many people.”
MDLSV, which offers medical dermatology, vein treatments, fat reduction and body contouring, injectables, and cosmetic laser treatments is currently seeking male and female volunteers for the new study. In addition to testing the topical gel under investigation for crow’s feet treatment, qualified participants in the study will also receive:
- Complementary study related products and exam by board-certified dermatologists
- Compensation for participation in study
“Recent studies and clinical trials have lead to the approval and availability of remarkable anti-aging and fat reduction products like Restylane Lyft and Kybella, and we are always looking for the next breakthrough in dermatology to offer our patients,” added Dr. Weiss.
About MDLSV and MD Body Sculpting CenterMDLSV is greater Baltimore’s leading medical and aesthetic dermatology practice. Botox for BlowoutsFebruary 29, 2016
Dermatologists from Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin and Vein Institute comment on women seeking Botox treatments to the scalp in order to prevent frizzy hair in hot, humid summer months.
According to a recent report in the Daily Mail, a growing number of women are asking dermatologists for Botox treatments to the scalp in order to minimize sweating, and therefore prevent frizzy hair. The new trend, believed to be inspired by Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s style, works by inhibiting the eccrine sweat gland. Results can reportedly last anywhere from three to nine months and reduce the need to wash the hair as frequently, while also preventing frizz.
“When used appropriately and administered by qualified, trained professionals, Botox is an effective treatment for many conditions, from fine lines and wrinkles to migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis),” said Dr. Robert Weiss, director of Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein.
Botox is used to treat patients for the medical condition known as hyperhidrosis-- too much sweating, typically of the underarms, palms, and feet. Hyperhidrosis suffererers produce too much sweat that is not affected by temperature or climate; the condition can require medical attention and surgery in severe cases.
“We’ve had success in treating patients for medical cases of excessive sweating with Botox, but we would advise patients to use caution when contemplating the treatment for the purpose of preserving the shelf life of a hairstyle,” added Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein dermatologist Dr. Margaret Weiss.
Botox injections are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, with over 11 million people in the United States having undergone the procedure.
“Cosmetic Botox injections work best to treat wrinkles, frown lines, smile lines, and crow’s feet around eyes, lips, neck, and chin,” said Dr. Karen Beasley of MDLSV.
MDLSV is greater Baltimore’s leading medical and aesthetic dermatology practice. With over 45 devices and injectable treatments, its expert board certified dermatologists offer comprehensive dermatologic and laser care, and multiple methods of noninvasive body contouring at their MD Body Sculpting Center.

We Are Now Radiesse Certified Hand InjectorsFebruary 22, 2016
We at MDLSV are proud to announce that each of our doctors is now an official Radiesse certified hand injector. Radiesse was recently FDA approved for use in the hands after clinical trials showed that it was safe and effective for volume restoration in hands with thinning skin and wrinkles. If this describes your hands, you may be a good candidate for Radiesse hand volumization!
Why Choose Radiesse for the Hands? Our doctors have years of experience injecting Radiesse as well as other fillers and neuromodulators. Hand rejuvenation has become a popular procedure recently, as many people are realizing that the hands are one of the biggest “tell zones” for giving away a person’s true age. Hands can be difficult to keep protected from the sun, and they show age very quickly. Radiesse can help to volumize and plump thinning skin, which serves a dual purpose of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hiding prominent veins.
Radiesse works by using calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres to both provide instant volume and stimulate the body to produce more natural collagen. Collagen is vital for skin volume and elasticity, but as we age the body produces less and less of it. Radiesse helps the skin to produce more collagen on its own, providing natural results that improve over time and last for a year or more.
The Radiesse ProcedureRadiesse injections involve no downtime, and you can return to your daily activities immediately following the procedure. Radiesse is mixed with lidocaine, which is a numbing agent, in order to reduce the amount of discomfort from the injection. If you are worried about pain or discomfort, a topical numbing agent can also be applied beforehand.
The side effects of Radiesse can include swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site. These side effects generally last anywhere from one to seven days before subsiding, and can be managed effectively with over the counter medication and ice packs.
Radiesse, Fraxel and IPL for Total Hand RejuvenationIn addition to thinning skin and wrinkles, many people have brown spots on their hands as a result of sun exposure. IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a laser treatment that helps to reduce the appearance of sun spots on the face, chest, and hands. IPL is a popular and safe procedure with proven results, and can be used effectively together with Radiesse and Fraxel for a comprehensive treatment that turns back time on the hands.
Schedule a Radiesse Consultation TodayIf you are interested in adding volume to aging hands, you could be a good candidate for Radiesse. To learn more about Radiesse and schedule your consultation with one of our certified injectors, call MDLSV today at 410.840.7525!
Tighten Your Skin (and Reduce Unwanted Fat) with ThermiTightFebruary 15, 2016
ThermiTight is a revolutionary procedure that provides significant results with little downtime or side effects. If you are experiencing sagging skin, small stubborn fat bulges, or both, you may be a good candidate for a ThermiTight procedure. ThermiTight can target loose skin of the neck, chin, jowls, stomach, arms, thighs, back, and more.
At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute, we are committed to providing the latest and most advanced body sculpting treatments. To learn more about ThermiTight and to schedule your consultation, just call us at 410-666-3960 today!
What is ThermiTight? The ThermiTight fiber delivers the skin tightening, fat melting heat of radiofrequency directly into problem areas of skin and fat tissue. This causes both immediate and delayed, effective results that continue to improve over time. A special temperature camera keeps the treatment safe. Non-surgical ThermiTight is a great alternative to plastic surgery or liposuction -- only a small incision is needed to allow a tiny probe under the skin to most effectively target dermal tissue. It has been proven to provide visible results in most patients.
Your expert dermatologists at MDLSV will have a thorough consultation with you to determine whether ThermiTight is the best option to achieve your goals.
What is a ThermiTight Procedure Like?First, the area to be treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic, allowing the patient to be comfortable without any significant discomfort during ThermiTight. One may feel a sensation of warmth as the radiofrequency energy goes to work, but there is usually no pain. Procedure time will depend on the areas to be treated, but is generally less than an hour.
ThermiTight causes little downtime in most patients, with temporary swelling, redness and bruising of the treated area as the most common side effects. These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own; some patients use ice or OTC painkillers as necessary. Patients can return to their everyday activities within 24 hours. Depending on the area treated, we may recommend short-term use of a compression garment like a neck sling.
Schedule a ThermiTight Consultation TodayIf you are suffering from signs of aging such as loose skin and stubborn fat that doesn’t go away even with diet and exercise, ThermiTight could be a great option for you. To find out more about this and other body contouring treatments, call MDLSV today at 410-666-3960!
The Latest Option to Contour Your Chin: CoolMiniFebruary 8, 2016
Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute was the first practice in Maryland to acquire the brand-new CoolMini device from CoolSculpting to non-invasively reduce double chins! No surgery, needles, or downtime--CoolMini uses cold to destroy fat cells! At MDLSV, we pride ourselves on offering the largest selection of body contouring devices in the Mid-Atlantic. We are excited to add CoolMini, currently the first and only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for submental fat under the chin, to our extensive collection of non-surgical fat reduction procedures.
What is CoolMini?CoolMini is a brand-new CoolSculpting applicator specifically designed to treat small areas of submental fat (under the chin). It can be used not only to reduce the appearance of a double chin, but also to reduce other hard-to-treat areas, such as the knees or armpits. Before CoolMini, these areas were very difficult to treat non-invasively, but now they can be reduced in an hour with minimal discomfort and downtime.
CoolMini uses the same proven effective proprietary fat-freezing technology developed and well-established by CoolSculpting. “Cryolipolysis” freezes fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue, with an initial reduction of about 20%. Multiple sessions may be needed for full results, depending on how much of a reduction you want to see. Sessions should be spaced about 2-3 months apart, to allow all of the frozen fat cells to be naturally eliminated by the body.
What is a CoolMini Treatment Like?During a CoolMini treatment, the applicator will be placed on the area of the body to be treated, after which the patient is free to relax and do whatever they want for the hour that the procedure takes. Many patients like to watch movies, read books, take a nap, or do work. During a double chin treatment, patients lay still on the headrest and watch TV or listen to music. CoolMini is not usually painful; there will be an initial sensation of deep cold and suction, after which the area will become numb. There is no downtime required following a procedure. Patients are free to resume their everyday activities immediately afterward!
Common side effects of CoolMini include temporary swelling, redness, or numbness. These should resolve on their own anywhere from a day to a week following the procedure.
Other Chin Contouring OptionsCoolMini is just the latest addition to the roster of fat reduction and skin tightening procedures we offer at MDLSV. We were also one of the first to acquire the recently FDA approved Kybella, which is an injectable treatment that also destroys submental fat under the chin. If your concern isn’t a double chin but rather sagging skin, a procedure such as Ultherapy or ThermiTight may be better for you. In certain cases, fat reduction and skin tightening can both be done for a comprehensive neck and chin rejuvenation that doesn’t require going under the knife!
Schedule a CoolMini Consultation TodayIf you want to contour your chin non-invasively, don’t hesitate to call Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein to learn more about all of the different options available to you. To schedule your consultation today, just call 410-666-3960!
The Dangers of Counterfeit Skin Care ProductsFebruary 1, 2016
Beauty products can be counterfeited just like fake luxury bags or watches. And while a fake bag may fall apart after a few weeks of use and have no other impact on the purchaser, fake beauty products can be actively harmful to the skin or just be a total waste of money and time. That's why it's so important to only buy beauty products from authorized retailers, and avoid products sold online or at a flea market for a cheap price. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein, we stock only trusted products from authorized cosmeceutical sellers. You can be sure that any product you buy from us is genuine, beneficial and not outdated.
Fake Beauty Products are Not EffectiveIt may be tempting to buy a product online for a cheaper price, but there will be consequences in the long run. Counterfeit beauty products, such as moisturizers, serums, and makeup, have caused rashes, breakouts, and other unwanted effects. Fakes have been found to contain carcinogens and other harmful substances, such as lead or mercury, that can have serious consequences after prolonged use. Many times, authentic original containers may be filled with cheaper substitute lotions or serums. Or they may have been improperly stored, leading to product degradation.
At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein, we work closely with our patients to customize a skin care regimen that enhances and maintains the effects of treatments such as laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel. Even by themselves, these genuine skincare products work to keep skin younger and healthy. Dermatologist-tested, our products are formulated with the most effective and luxurious ingredients to keep your skin looking its best. Counterfeits can reverse any benefits that your skin reaps from cosmetic treatments and regular use of real beauty products.
How To Tell if a Beauty Product is FakeLook for signs that indicate a beauty product may be counterfeit:
- Outer packaging that looks like it has been rewrapped
- Old or missing seal
- Sold online at an obscure website
- Sold from third-party sellers such as those at auction sites or flea markets
- Website looks unprofessional and has grammar or spelling errors
- Payment process on website is not secure
Counterfeit packaging can be hard to detect, so the best way to be sure you’re getting the real deal is to purchase from well-known authorized sellers. If a website seems to have a lot of product in stock and is selling at a significantly lower price than normal, chances are it is not legitimate.
Here at MDLSV, we want to help you achieve youthful, healthy skin and keep it for as long as possible. Fake products may cause reactions in the skin that will have to be treated professionally and may cost you more in the long run than you saved buying the cheaper fake product. Be safe and only buy beauty products from authorized sellers!

Do your hands give your age away? MDLSV can help with Radiesse!January 26, 2016
We at Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein are proud to announce that each of our dermatologists is now an officially certified Radiesse hand injector. Clinical trials have shown that Radiesse is safe and effective for volume restoration in hands with thinning skin and wrinkles. If this describes your hands, you may be a good candidate for FDA-cleared Radiesse hand restoration!
Why Choose Radiesse for the Hands? Our board-certified dermatologists have years of experience injecting Radiesse as well as other fillers. Hand rejuvenation has become increasingly popular, as many people realize that the hands are one of the biggest “tell zones” for revealing a person’s true age. Hands can be difficult to keep protected from the sun, and they show age very quickly. Radiesse can help to volumize and plump thinning skin, which serves a dual purpose of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hiding prominent veins.
Radiesse’ calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres provide instant volume and stimulate the body to produce more natural collagen. Collagen is vital for skin volume and elasticity, but we produce less as we age. Radiesse helps the skin to produce more collagen, providing natural results that improve over time and last for a year or more.
