Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute Conducting Clinical Research Study on Potential New Treatment for Crow’s FeetMarch 4, 2016
Cosmetic dermatologists from the Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute (MDLSV) are currently seeking volunteers for an investigational topical gel to non-invasively treat crow’s feet.
An aging population, coupled with the desire to prevent premature aging among younger men and women has led to the development of many highly effective, non-surgical cosmetic options to treat some of the most stubborn signs of aging, without the need for some of the more invasive traditional plastic surgery procedures used a generation ago. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently given its stamp of approval to a range of minimally invasive injectable and body contouring treatments.
“At MDLSV, we make it our mission to offer men and women the most advanced cosmetic treatments available to help achieve their personal goals, whether it’s to restore volume to the cheeks and minimize frown lines, or to help reduce the hard to treat double chin,” said board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robert Weiss, director of Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein. “As part of our commitment to offering our patients the best dermatology services and treatments on the market, we regularly participate in clinical trials and conduct clinical research for new products. We are currently seeking volunteers for a topical gel designed to target crow’s feet, which can often be the first sign of aging for many people.”
MDLSV, which offers medical dermatology, vein treatments, fat reduction and body contouring, injectables, and cosmetic laser treatments is currently seeking male and female volunteers for the new study. In addition to testing the topical gel under investigation for crow’s feet treatment, qualified participants in the study will also receive:
- Complementary study related products and exam by board-certified dermatologists
- Compensation for participation in study
“Recent studies and clinical trials have lead to the approval and availability of remarkable anti-aging and fat reduction products like Restylane Lyft and Kybella, and we are always looking for the next breakthrough in dermatology to offer our patients,” added Dr. Weiss.

Botox for BlowoutsFebruary 29, 2016
Dermatologists from Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin and Vein Institute comment on women seeking Botox treatments to the scalp in order to prevent frizzy hair in hot, humid summer months.
According to a recent report in the Daily Mail, a growing number of women are asking dermatologists for Botox treatments to the scalp in order to minimize sweating, and therefore prevent frizzy hair. The new trend, believed to be inspired by Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s style, works by inhibiting the eccrine sweat gland. Results can reportedly last anywhere from three to nine months and reduce the need to wash the hair as frequently, while also preventing frizz.
“When used appropriately and administered by qualified, trained professionals, Botox is an effective treatment for many conditions, from fine lines and wrinkles to migraines and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis),” said Dr. Robert Weiss, director of Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein.
Botox is used to treat patients for the medical condition known as hyperhidrosis-- too much sweating, typically of the underarms, palms, and feet. Hyperhidrosis suffererers produce too much sweat that is not affected by temperature or climate; the condition can require medical attention and surgery in severe cases.
“We’ve had success in treating patients for medical cases of excessive sweating with Botox, but we would advise patients to use caution when contemplating the treatment for the purpose of preserving the shelf life of a hairstyle,” added Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein dermatologist Dr. Margaret Weiss.
Botox injections are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, with over 11 million people in the United States having undergone the procedure.
“Cosmetic Botox injections work best to treat wrinkles, frown lines, smile lines, and crow’s feet around eyes, lips, neck, and chin,” said Dr. Karen Beasley of MDLSV.
MDLSV is greater Baltimore’s leading medical and aesthetic dermatology practice. With over 45 devices and injectable treatments, its expert board certified dermatologists offer comprehensive dermatologic and laser care, and multiple methods of noninvasive body contouring at their MD Body Sculpting Center.

We Are Now Radiesse Certified Hand InjectorsFebruary 22, 2016
We at MDLSV are proud to announce that each of our doctors is now an official Radiesse certified hand injector. Radiesse was recently FDA approved for use in the hands after clinical trials showed that it was safe and effective for volume restoration in hands with thinning skin and wrinkles. If this describes your hands, you may be a good candidate for Radiesse hand volumization!
Why Choose Radiesse for the Hands? Our doctors have years of experience injecting Radiesse as well as other fillers and neuromodulators. Hand rejuvenation has become a popular procedure recently, as many people are realizing that the hands are one of the biggest “tell zones” for giving away a person’s true age. Hands can be difficult to keep protected from the sun, and they show age very quickly. Radiesse can help to volumize and plump thinning skin, which serves a dual purpose of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hiding prominent veins.
Radiesse works by using calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres to both provide instant volume and stimulate the body to produce more natural collagen. Collagen is vital for skin volume and elasticity, but as we age the body produces less and less of it. Radiesse helps the skin to produce more collagen on its own, providing natural results that improve over time and last for a year or more.
The Radiesse ProcedureRadiesse injections involve no downtime, and you can return to your daily activities immediately following the procedure. Radiesse is mixed with lidocaine, which is a numbing agent, in order to reduce the amount of discomfort from the injection. If you are worried about pain or discomfort, a topical numbing agent can also be applied beforehand.
The side effects of Radiesse can include swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection site. These side effects generally last anywhere from one to seven days before subsiding, and can be managed effectively with over the counter medication and ice packs.
Radiesse, Fraxel and IPL for Total Hand RejuvenationIn addition to thinning skin and wrinkles, many people have brown spots on their hands as a result of sun exposure. IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a laser treatment that helps to reduce the appearance of sun spots on the face, chest, and hands. IPL is a popular and safe procedure with proven results, and can be used effectively together with Radiesse and Fraxel for a comprehensive treatment that turns back time on the hands.
Schedule a Radiesse Consultation TodayIf you are interested in adding volume to aging hands, you could be a good candidate for Radiesse. To learn more about Radiesse and schedule your consultation with one of our certified injectors, call MDLSV today at 410.840.7525!
Tighten Your Skin (and Reduce Unwanted Fat) with ThermiTightFebruary 15, 2016
ThermiTight is a revolutionary procedure that provides significant results with little downtime or side effects. If you are experiencing sagging skin, small stubborn fat bulges, or both, you may be a good candidate for a ThermiTight procedure. ThermiTight can target loose skin of the neck, chin, jowls, stomach, arms, thighs, back, and more.
At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein Institute, we are committed to providing the latest and most advanced body sculpting treatments. To learn more about ThermiTight and to schedule your consultation, just call us at 410-840-7525 today!
What is ThermiTight? The ThermiTight fiber delivers the skin tightening, fat melting heat of radiofrequency directly into problem areas of skin and fat tissue. This causes both immediate and delayed, effective results that continue to improve over time. A special temperature camera keeps the treatment safe. Non-surgical ThermiTight is a great alternative to plastic surgery or liposuction -- only a small incision is needed to allow a tiny probe under the skin to most effectively target dermal tissue. It has been proven to provide visible results in most patients.
Your expert dermatologists at MDLSV will have a thorough consultation with you to determine whether ThermiTight is the best option to achieve your goals.
What is a ThermiTight Procedure Like?First, the area to be treated will be numbed with a local anesthetic, allowing the patient to be comfortable without any significant discomfort during ThermiTight. One may feel a sensation of warmth as the radiofrequency energy goes to work, but there is usually no pain. Procedure time will depend on the areas to be treated, but is generally less than an hour.
ThermiTight causes little downtime in most patients, with temporary swelling, redness and bruising of the treated area as the most common side effects. These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own; some patients use ice or OTC painkillers as necessary. Patients can return to their everyday activities within 24 hours. Depending on the area treated, we may recommend short-term use of a compression garment like a neck sling.
Schedule a ThermiTight Consultation TodayIf you are suffering from signs of aging such as loose skin and stubborn fat that doesn’t go away even with diet and exercise, ThermiTight could be a great option for you. To find out more about this and other body contouring treatments, call MDLSV today at 410-840-7525!
The Latest Option to Contour Your Chin: CoolMiniFebruary 8, 2016
Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein Institute was the first practice in Maryland to acquire the brand-new CoolMini device from CoolSculpting to non-invasively reduce double chins! No surgery, needles, or downtime--CoolMini uses cold to destroy fat cells! At MDLSV, we pride ourselves on offering the largest selection of body contouring devices in the Mid-Atlantic. We are excited to add CoolMini, currently the first and only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for submental fat under the chin, to our extensive collection of non-surgical fat reduction procedures.
What is CoolMini?CoolMini is a brand-new CoolSculpting applicator specifically designed to treat small areas of submental fat (under the chin). It can be used not only to reduce the appearance of a double chin, but also to reduce other hard-to-treat areas, such as the knees or armpits. Before CoolMini, these areas were very difficult to treat non-invasively, but now they can be reduced in an hour with minimal discomfort and downtime.
CoolMini uses the same proven effective proprietary fat-freezing technology developed and well-established by CoolSculpting. “Cryolipolysis” freezes fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue, with an initial reduction of about 20%. Multiple sessions may be needed for full results, depending on how much of a reduction you want to see. Sessions should be spaced about 2-3 months apart, to allow all of the frozen fat cells to be naturally eliminated by the body.
What is a CoolMini Treatment Like?During a CoolMini treatment, the applicator will be placed on the area of the body to be treated, after which the patient is free to relax and do whatever they want for the hour that the procedure takes. Many patients like to watch movies, read books, take a nap, or do work. During a double chin treatment, patients lay still on the headrest and watch TV or listen to music. CoolMini is not usually painful; there will be an initial sensation of deep cold and suction, after which the area will become numb. There is no downtime required following a procedure. Patients are free to resume their everyday activities immediately afterward!
Common side effects of CoolMini include temporary swelling, redness, or numbness. These should resolve on their own anywhere from a day to a week following the procedure.
Other Chin Contouring OptionsCoolMini is just the latest addition to the roster of fat reduction and skin tightening procedures we offer at MDLSV. We were also one of the first to acquire the recently FDA approved Kybella, which is an injectable treatment that also destroys submental fat under the chin. If your concern isn’t a double chin but rather sagging skin, a procedure such as Ultherapy or ThermiTight may be better for you. In certain cases, fat reduction and skin tightening can both be done for a comprehensive neck and chin rejuvenation that doesn’t require going under the knife!
Schedule a CoolMini Consultation TodayIf you want to contour your chin non-invasively, don’t hesitate to call Maryland Dermatology Laser, Skin and Vein to learn more about all of the different options available to you. To schedule your consultation today, just call 410-666-3960!
The Dangers of Counterfeit Skin Care ProductsFebruary 1, 2016
Beauty products can be counterfeited just like fake luxury bags or watches. And while a fake bag may fall apart after a few weeks of use and have no other impact on the purchaser, fake beauty products can be actively harmful to the skin or just be a total waste of money and time. That's why it's so important to only buy beauty products from authorized retailers, and avoid products sold online or at a flea market for a cheap price. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein, we stock only trusted products from authorized cosmeceutical sellers. You can be sure that any product you buy from us is genuine, beneficial and not outdated.
Fake Beauty Products are Not EffectiveIt may be tempting to buy a product online for a cheaper price, but there will be consequences in the long run. Counterfeit beauty products, such as moisturizers, serums, and makeup, have caused rashes, breakouts, and other unwanted effects. Fakes have been found to contain carcinogens and other harmful substances, such as lead or mercury, that can have serious consequences after prolonged use. Many times, authentic original containers may be filled with cheaper substitute lotions or serums. Or they may have been improperly stored, leading to product degradation.
At Maryland Dermatology Laser Skin and Vein, we work closely with our patients to customize a skin care regimen that enhances and maintains the effects of treatments such as laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel. Even by themselves, these genuine skincare products work to keep skin younger and healthy. Dermatologist-tested, our products are formulated with the most effective and luxurious ingredients to keep your skin looking its best. Counterfeits can reverse any benefits that your skin reaps from cosmetic treatments and regular use of real beauty products.
How To Tell if a Beauty Product is FakeLook for signs that indicate a beauty product may be counterfeit:
- Outer packaging that looks like it has been rewrapped
- Old or missing seal
- Sold online at an obscure website
- Sold from third-party sellers such as those at auction sites or flea markets
- Website looks unprofessional and has grammar or spelling errors
- Payment process on website is not secure
Counterfeit packaging can be hard to detect, so the best way to be sure you’re getting the real deal is to purchase from well-known authorized sellers. If a website seems to have a lot of product in stock and is selling at a significantly lower price than normal, chances are it is not legitimate.
Here at MDLSV, we want to help you achieve youthful, healthy skin and keep it for as long as possible. Fake products may cause reactions in the skin that will have to be treated professionally and may cost you more in the long run than you saved buying the cheaper fake product. Be safe and only buy beauty products from authorized sellers!

Do your hands give your age away? MDLSV can help with Radiesse!January 26, 2016
We at Maryland Dermatology, Laser, Skin & Vein are proud to announce that each of our dermatologists is now an officially certified Radiesse hand injector. Clinical trials have shown that Radiesse is safe and effective for volume restoration in hands with thinning skin and wrinkles. If this describes your hands, you may be a good candidate for FDA-cleared Radiesse hand restoration!
Why Choose Radiesse for the Hands? Our board-certified dermatologists have years of experience injecting Radiesse as well as other fillers. Hand rejuvenation has become increasingly popular, as many people realize that the hands are one of the biggest “tell zones” for revealing a person’s true age. Hands can be difficult to keep protected from the sun, and they show age very quickly. Radiesse can help to volumize and plump thinning skin, which serves a dual purpose of reducing the appearance of wrinkles and hiding prominent veins.
Radiesse’ calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres provide instant volume and stimulate the body to produce more natural collagen. Collagen is vital for skin volume and elasticity, but we produce less as we age. Radiesse helps the skin to produce more collagen, providing natural results that improve over time and last for a year or more.
